Getting Settled in Your New Home: First Day Home

I have recently been writing about upgrades for the home and in the kitchen either to help sell your home or just for your own aesthetic purposes.

What about those first steps though? We often plan for the future and the changes we’ll make to create our perfect space.

No one ever thinks about that first day though – and it’s all about that first day in your new home that can either make you feel settled, or keep you tossing and turning all night in unease.

Here’s what to dig into that first day in your new home:

  • Kitchen and Bathrooms

When it comes to feeling at home, it’s all about our basic needs being met.

The small things, like putting soap, towels, and toilet paper on a roll in your bathroom ensure you don’t feel like a stranger in someone else’s bathroom.

For the kitchen, set up essentials like disposable silverware, cups, and plates since you may not have time to unpack all of the dishes yet. You can also do a quick run to a nearby grocery store or convenient store for a break and snacks/drinks to fill the fridge with for tomorrow when the real unpacking happens.

  • New Address Logistics

If you haven’t already, then you need to make sure to update your mailing address for all important services you receive mail from.

Don’t forget paperwork for utilities, driver’s license, etc. Oh, and memorize your new address – makes ordering pizza that first night a lot quicker!

  • Trash and Recycling

A major logistics factor to get figured out ASAP is trash and recycling. Moving involves lots of boxes, bags, and garbage. You need you know what kind of bags are acceptable for local recycling, as well as the pick-up schedule for trash and recycling.

If you’re unsure, you can check the city website, or ask a neighbor which counts for bonus points. Everyone loves a friendly neighbor!
